In October 1851 a massive storm hit off the coast of Prince Edward Island, lasting for two days. It tore sails from masts, capsized ships sat at anchor and forced other ships to careen into those who tried to remain stationary.

Overall, the storm was said to have destroyed almost 80 ships and killed over 200 men, who washed up on the shores of PEI days later. Many of these men were part of the American fishing fleet and the storm greatly damaged their operations in the area, from whence the name: Yankee Gale. ⛵️

Yankee Gale is also the name of this American Pale Ale from Lone Oak Brewing, the first proper brew of my week-long PEI holiday! Brewed with malts from the island, it’s a hazy little number leading with some juicy notes of passionfruit, mango, and lemon backed by a hint of pine and spice.

It has a nice malt backbone to it, which carries things nice and smoothly with some subtle bready undertones complimenting the tropical flavors and pronounced stone fruit. The finish brings with it a moderate piney bitterness that cuts through things nicely and leaves a dry, refreshing ending. 🥭 🌲
