Throughout the ages, beer has served a somewhat medicinal purpose. Indeed records show that Nubian brewers stumbled upon beer laced with the antibiotic tetracycline, sailors used spruce beers to cure or prevent scurvy, and the Victorians used beer to fortify the body with B-vitamins and iron. 🌲 🍺
But while our ancestors might have not understood why they could use beer as a medicine, we now have a better grasp. Indeed, we know that hops contain phytoestrogens which can prevent certain cancers, aid hearth health, increase libido and reduce anxiety, while barley can strengthen the spleen and gall bladder. It has been shown that beer consumption can even increase bone density too. Of course, however, all of this is to be considered through the lens of very moderate consumption, as we all know the dangers of the overconsumption of both alcohol and the associated sugars that come with it!
Based in Saint- Jacques-de-Montcalm, L’apothicaire – Microbrasserie brand themselves as purveyors of a variety of alcoholic elixirs for every ailment. They’ve been on my radar for a very long time, but I finally got round to trying this lager recently thanks to Épicerie Prette.👌🏻 😋
Svetly Lezak: Beer Review
This classic Svelty Lezak offers up floral aromas of Saaz alongside sweet dough, fresh bread and croissants. It has a rustic body that pours slightly cloudy with a great moussey head that delivers plenty of almost chewy mouthfeel. There’s a honied sweetness throughout that’s masterfully balanced with a mild earthy, floral hop bite in the finish. An excellent first try of this brewery! 🥐 🌱

Originally from England, Mike Davis came to Quebec ten years ago to study history. During this time he fell in love with the microbreweries of Quebec, which reminded him of English pubs. Now, he holds a Ph.D in History from McGill University, but works in the beer world as the Brand Ambassador for Microbrasserie 4 Origines.
