Burton 1924 is a historical ale from Brasserie Albion based on a recipe from 1924. For added authenticity they used heritage English malts and whole cone hops before maturing the beer in their cellar for 3 months before release.

The Road to Burton Ale

But what is a Burton Ale? Well in short, Burton Ales are interchangeable with Old Ales but typically fruitier and a little lower in alcohol. The longer, more interesting answer is that they were anything historically brewed in Burton-Upon-Trent. During the 18th century this town established itself as the centre of British brewing, with “Burton Ales” becoming popular in London and even exported to the Baltic region, where they became popular in the Russian court.

Indeed, by the mid-19th century the term Burton Ale had become a marketing term akin to the modern-day New England IPA, with everyone from Newcastle to Dorchester naming their beers as such. By the time of this recipe, Burton Ales were mass-produced but were slowly waning in popularity compared to Pale Ales, becoming a more niche item on pub menus across the country.

1924 Burton : Beer Review

This brew offers a unique insight into the style. Its nose boasts rich notes of molasses, brown sugar, with plenty of red fruits—prunes, dates, currants—while some nuttiness hangs in the background and hedgerow-spiced hop accents pique the nostrils.

On the palate, its sweetness is led by caramel and molasses alongside plenty of fruity esters. Yet at 6% the body is not overwhelmingly sticky and cloying like some barley wines or even other old ales. Instead, it drinks smooth and round but with a slickness that goes down remarkably easily, complemented by ample earthy bitterness with tea-leaf notes in the finish, balancing the sweetness excellently. An excellent beer!
